The only real thing I want to note is that, though you're right that MediaWiki wasn't designed as a platform/framework, one of my chief goals is to make the MediaWiki/SMW/etc. system into just that, by filling in the missing gaps in functionality - with extensions like Widgets and External Data as big players in trying to make the system as flexible as possible. AcaWiki looks great, and I hope it takes off!
